Jonathan Ackerman, Esquire, Principal at the Law Office of Jonathan Ackerman, LLC. In this presentation, he will provide an in-depth discussion regarding Gift Acceptance Policies, including:

  • Why charities should adopt them and why some do not;
  • What should be contained in them;
  • How to adopt or revise them;
  • How a well-designed Gift Acceptance Policy can empower Planned Giving teams

Jonathan will also walk through tools that highlight the more sensitive decisions Boards will need to make and the actions that development staff will need to take in order to comply with such policies.

Jonathan is licensed to practice law in Maryland and the District of Columbia, and over his 35 year career, has focused on tax-exempt organizations, charitable gift and estate planning, probate, federal and state tax procedure, and business formations and transactions.

He represents charities both inside and outside MD and DC with regard to life cycle issues, such as creation, tax qualification, governance policies, Board composition, Conflicts of Interest, fundraising, endowment administration and interpretation, the drafting of gift agreements, and dissolution, as well as IRS / tax issues, such as a charity’s acceptance of complex assets and dealing with complex gift planning vehicles, unrelated business income tax, real property tax exemption, etc. Jonathan represents families in preparing Wills, Trusts, Health Care and Economic Powers of Attorney, in administering an estate or trust upon the passing of an individual, and in integrating philanthropy into a family’s estate and financial planning.

He served as President of the National Committee on Planned Giving (now, the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners), is a frequent speaker and author, and has earned Martindale-Hubbell’s highest AV Preeminent® rating for ethical standards and legal ability, and SuperLawyer and BestLawyer recognitions.

Following Jonathan's presentation is the National Capital Gift Planning Council's Annual Business Meeting

NCGPC President Nikki Peters will share the State of the Council, and members will vote on the financial report and proposed slate of Board-nominated Officers and Directors. The bylaws and proposed slate of candidates for the NCGPC Board of Directors will be sent to attendees prior to the webinar.
